Just Me Collection

THE VOGUE DOLL COMPANY

Just-Me-Logo-pink

Perhaps you are already familiar with the story of Jennie Graves. She was a talented housewife living in Boston’s suburbs with a passion for costume designing, in particular for doll costume designing. She had two daughters, June and Virginia, and practiced her talents on their dolls, and later on neighbor’s dolls. Over time, Mrs. Graves’ work became so popular that she decided to go into business, founding The Vogue Doll Shoppe in her Sommerville, Massachusetts home in 1922. At first Mrs. Graves imported bisque dolls from Europe in all sizes from famous doll makers.  However, one of the most popular dolls imported in the 1920’s was a small “Just Me” doll from Germany designed by Armand Marseille with a bisque head and a jointed composition body.

Mrs. Graves specialized in doll dress designing and her little hand-tailored “Just Me” ensembles usually reflected the styles of the day. She used only the finest fabrics, trims and accessories for their costumes, including matching hats, bows, purses and pom-pom tie shoes.  Many of the costumes had hand-embroidered edging, smocking or appliqués, and she proudly sewed her “Vogue Doll Shoppe” tag into each dress.  When a doll survives to present day, the costume very often does too, which speaks to Mrs. Graves’ well-made and quality styles.
